# Sound Recipe - Britpop / Indie Support Drums

## Target

Solid, supportive indie/Britpop drums — **kick-snare locked to bass**, natural-ish hats, moderate room, no machine glamour. Not LinnDrum pop (see [Lana Cinematic Slow Pop](lana-del-rey-cinematic-slow-pop-drums.md)), not DM machine (see [Machine Rhythm](depeche-mode-machine-rhythm.md)). The job: **straightforward groove** that lets guitar, synth, and vocal lead.

The sound should feel:

- Solid and natural (acoustic-hybrid OK)
- Moderate room (not gated 80s, not dub-dark)
- Locked to bass and guitar rhythm
- Controlled highs (hats don't chatter)
- Unshowy — expensive through **feel**, not production fireworks

Follows the house method: **intention → source → preset/plugin start → routing → settings → automation → taste checks.**

## Useful References

- Britpop / indie support — Oasis-adjacent solidity without Britrock arena size
- Adjacent: [New Wave Clean Chorus Guitar](../guitar/new-wave-clean-chorus-guitar.md), AC15 chime guitar rows in [07 - Guitar](../../instruments/07-guitar.md)

Steal the jobs: backbeat confidence, room glue, restraint on hats and fills.

## Best For

Guitar-led indie, new-wave support beds, Britpop-adjacent tracks where drums shouldn't sound electronic.

## Source + preset starting points

| Source | ⭐ | Start From | Going For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logic Drum Kit Designer | ⭐ | Indie/rock kit, moderate room | Fast believable acoustic |
| NI Abbey Road 80s Drummer | | Full kit, **low in mix** | Room air under a tighter kit |
| XLN XO | ⭐ | Acoustic/indie pack | Custom kick/snare/hat |
| GForce IconDrum | | Only if you want **80s machine layer** under acoustic — keep low | Hybrid sheen |

Default: **one** primary kit — DKD or XO — not stacked libraries.

---

## Insert chain

**Kick:** Pro-Q → light comp → mono merge low

**Snare:** Pro-Q → **1176** or **LA-2A** light → **room/plate send** moderate

**Hats:** HPF ~300 Hz; level **conservative**; no bright 909 hats

**Bus:** **Solid Bus Comp** or SSL-style 2–3 dB GR → optional **Studer** very light

---

## Room

- **Eventide SP2016** room/plate or **Logic ChromaVerb** room — shared send
- Shorter than cinematic recipes; vocal must stay forward
- Abbey Road 80s layer: **-15 dB or more** under main kit for air only

---

## Settings anchors (taste-check)

- Groove: straight 4/4 or simple 8ths; **avoid** busy fills
- Snare: 2 and 4 strong; clap layer optional, quiet
- Kick: tuned to bass root; short-medium decay

Taste knobs: **room send level**, **hat level**.

---

## Adjustment Rules

| Problem | Try |
|---|---|
| Too 80s/gated | Less Abbey Road layer; shorter reverb; drier snare |
| Too weak | Snare comp + transient; tighter kick/snare timing |
| Hats cheap/anxious | Lower hats; simpler pattern; LPF ~6 kHz |
| Too cinematic | Less room; simpler kit; IconDrum layer off |

---

## Common Mistakes

- IconDrum/LinnDrum as the main identity (wrong recipe)
- Huge room (Hooverphonic recipe territory)
- Busy drummer fills in verses
- Electronic 909 hats on acoustic kit

## Practical Summary

Pick **DKD or XO** for a solid indie kit, moderate **room send**, conservative hats, light bus glue. Optional **Abbey Road 80s** very low for air. Lock kick/snare to bass and guitar — the drums should feel **confident and invisible**, not produced for their own sake.
