# Sound Recipe - TR-808/909 Electronic Pop Foundation

## Target

The core electronic-pop rhythm engine: a deep 808 sub-kick, a snappy 909 or layered clap, tight hats, and a groove that feels modern and expensive without being busy. This is the default beat to reach for when a track needs a clean, club-or-pop machine foundation rather than a specific artist kit.

The sound should feel:

- Deep and weighted low end (808 sub you feel)
- Snappy and clear in the backbeat (909/clap)
- Tight and controlled up top (hats that drive, not clutter)
- Programmed and confident — straight, with velocity for life

Follows the house method: **intention → source → preset/plugin start → routing → settings → automation → taste checks.**

## Useful References

- 808/909-driven electronic pop, electro, and dance-adjacent art-pop (Grimes, Goldfrapp, modern synth-pop)
- The shared rhythmic base under [Grimes / Layered Art-Pop](../synths-and-production/grimes-layered-art-pop.md) and [Goldfrapp / Glam Analog](../synths-and-production/goldfrapp-glam-analog.md)

Steal the job, not a track: a deep machine kick + clean backbeat + tight hats that any electronic-pop song can sit on. For the darker, gated-snare DM flavor use [Machine Rhythm](depeche-mode-machine-rhythm.md) instead.

---

## Best For

- A fast, reliable electronic-pop groove foundation
- Tracks that need a deep sub-kick and modern backbeat
- Beat-first writing (see Song Starter 2 on the [decision map](../../core-guide/00-decision-map.md))
- A neutral base to specialize later (glam, glitch, icy)

---

## Core Roles

1. **808 sub-kick** — the low-end identity
2. **Backbeat (909 snare / clap)** — snap and clarity
3. **Hats and top** — drive and motion
4. **Programming and groove** — straight, velocity-shaped
5. **Drum bus glue** — what makes it sound expensive

# 1. 808 Sub-Kick

## Intention

A deep kick you feel in the chest that still reads on small speakers.

## Source + preset starting points

| Source | ⭐ | Start From | Going For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roland TR-808 | ⭐ | Long-decay 808 kick | Deep tuned sub with body |
| Audija KickDrum | | Designed 808-style kick | Produced path: pitch-curve + click sculpting when the 808 sample won't sit |
| XLN XO | | Layered kick (sub + click) | One-shot kick with built-in punch |
| Logic Drum Synth | 🟢 | Synth kick | Fast tuned sub layer |

Performance: tune the 808 to the track key (root or fifth). If it needs more attack, layer a short clicky kick on top, filtered so only the click passes above ~120 Hz.

## Insert chain

1. **FabFilter Pro-Q 4** — HPF the rumble below ~30 Hz; tighten 200–400 Hz mud
2. **Saturation** (UAD Oxide Tape / Logic Clip Distortion, light) — so the sub reads on phones
3. Optional **FabFilter Pro-C 3** — gentle control if the sub is uneven

## Routing

- Kick → **Drum Bus**; keep kick + sub **mono, centered**
- Sidechain bass to the kick (or both to a ghost trigger)

## Settings anchors

- Decay to taste — long for 808-forward, short for tight pop
- One kick identity; resist stacking three kicks

## Automation

- Open/lengthen the 808 tail in drops; tighten in verses

## Taste checks

- Mono-check and phone-check: if the kick disappears, add saturation/click, don't just raise level.

---

## Produced Path — Audija KickDrum

Use when tuning an 808 sample still won't make the kick **read on phones** or lock to the key.

## Source + chain

1. **KickDrum** OSC — pitch envelope **~200 Hz → ~45–55 Hz** over **~100–200 ms** for classic 808 length; shorter decay for tight pop
2. Optional **SAMPLE** layer for click only, HPF **~120 Hz** on the click
3. **Pro-Q 4** — HPF ~30 Hz; light **Oxide** for translation
4. Same routing as fast path: mono, Drum Bus, sidechain bass

## Settings anchors (taste-check)

- **One kick identity** — designed KickDrum *or* TR-808, not three kicks
- **Favorite patches:** *(add when you find one)*

## Taste checks

- TR-808 still wins for **fast** iconic 808 tone; KickDrum wins when **design** is the problem

---

# 2. Backbeat — 909 Snare / Clap

## Intention

A clear, snappy 2-and-4 that cuts without harshness.

## Source + chain

- **TR-909** snare for drive, or layer a **clap** (808/XO) for width and pop
- **Pro-Q 4**: presence 3–5 kHz, HPF ~250 Hz; **UAD 1176** fast for snap; optional short room/plate send

## Settings anchors

- Layer one snare + one clap, time-aligned; tune both to the track
- Keep claps slightly stereo, snare more centered

## Automation

- Add the clap layer only in choruses for lift; flam/double the snare into a fill sparingly

## Taste checks

- If the backbeat is harsh, cut 2–5 kHz before reaching for more compression.

---

# 3. Hats and Top

## Intention

Motion and drive without anxiety or cheapness.

## Source + chain

- **808/909 hats** or XO; HPF ~400 Hz; tame 8–10 kHz fizz
- Closed hats drive; one open hat per bar for lift

## Settings anchors

- Velocity-shape the 16ths (accent the off-beats); pan slightly or keep mono and let width come from reverb
- One shaker or top-loop max — more than that and it gets cheap

## Automation

- Open hats / add a top-loop into the chorus; filter the top down in breakdowns

## Taste checks

- If the hats make the song feel anxious or cheap, thin them or slow the pattern.

---

# 4. Programming and Groove

## Intention

Straight and modern, but alive — velocity and small swing do the work, not more notes.

## Settings anchors

- Mostly straight 1/8–1/16; a little swing (8–15%) if it should groove
- Use **velocity** for accents; keep fills minimal
- Lock kick and bass rhythmically

## Automation

- Drop to kick-only or silence before the chorus; build hats across the verse

## Taste checks

- Mute test: every element earns its place, or it goes.

---

# 5. Drum Bus Glue

## Intention

Cohesion and weight — the difference between "808 preset" and "record."

## Source + chain

1. **Drum Bus** → **UAD 1176 / SSL G Bus / NI Solid Bus Comp** — 4:1, ~2–4 dB GR, slow attack, auto release
2. **UAD Studer A800** — tape weight and glue
3. Optional **iZotope Trash** (parallel) for grit on a blend

## Routing

- **Reverb (short):** snare/clap only — plate/room
- Kick + sub: dry, mono, sidechained to bass

## Automation

- Parallel-comp/tape blend up in choruses for size

## Taste checks

- Collapse to mono — kick and snare must stay strong; if the bus pumps, slow the attack.

---

# Routing Summary

- **Drum Bus:** 1176/SSL glue → Studer A800 tape
- **Short reverb:** snare/clap send only
- **Kick/sub:** dry, mono, sidechained to bass
- **Mix Bus:** UAD SSL G Bus → Pro-Q 4 → limiter/Ozone

---

# Fast Path

1. TR-808 kick → tune to key → Pro-Q HPF → light saturation
2. 909 snare + clap layer → 1176 snap
3. 808 hats → HPF → velocity-shape
4. Program straight with velocity; lock to bass
5. Drum Bus: SSL glue → Studer A800 tape

---

# Adjustment Rules

**Not deep enough:** longer 808 decay, more sub-saturation, mono the low end, sidechain the bass.

**Too busy:** fewer hits, velocity instead of notes, drop a top layer.

**Sounds cheap:** thin/slow the hats, tune the kick to key, add bus glue + tape.

**Too harsh:** cut 2–5 kHz on snare/clap, darken hats.

---

# Common Mistakes

- Stacking three kicks instead of tuning one
- Wide/stereo sub-kick
- Anxious 16th hats that cheapen the track
- Untuned drums fighting the bass
- No bus glue or tape

# Practical Summary

Tune one deep 808 kick to the song key and saturate it so it reads everywhere, lay a clear 909-snare-plus-clap backbeat, and keep the hats tight and velocity-shaped. Program straight with velocity for life, lock the kick to the bass, and glue the kit with bus compression and tape. Depth, clarity, and restraint make it expensive — not more layers.
