Sound Recipe - Psyche Flash Dub / Dub-Space Percussion
Target
Slow, heavy, dub-space drums — Psyche Flash / Weatherall-adjacent: a deep kick, dry dusty snare, sparse hats, dark room, vinyl texture. Not a four-on-floor club groove (see Weatherall Dubby Indie-Dance) — half-time weight and space between hits.
The sound should feel:
- Slow and heavy (kick owns the sub)
- Dry and dusty (tape/vinyl, not glossy)
- Sparse (room to breathe)
- Dark reverb on snare only (kick stays dry)
- Hypnotic — repetition + dub throws
Follows the house method: intention → source → preset/plugin start → routing → settings → automation → taste checks.
Useful References
- Weatherall / dub-space indie-dance; slow breakbeat pressure
- Adjacent: Weatherall Dubby Groove, Mono Formica Blues, One Dove Atmosphere
Steal the jobs: heavy kick, dry snare, filtered perc, dub delay throws, vinyl age.
Best For
Dub-space intros, slow electronic pop, cinematic breakdowns, psychedelic trip-hop beds.
Source + preset starting points
| Source | ⭐ | Start From | Going For |
|---|---|---|---|
| XLN XO / NI Battery 4 | ⭐ | Chopped break or custom one-shots | Dusty kick + snare cells |
| Logic Quick Sampler | Sliced break, re-pitched | Off-grid human feel | |
| Roland TR-808 | Sub kick under sample kick | Sub weight | |
| GForce IconDrum / DMX | Vintage machine snare | Dry 80s snap optional |
Layer one sample kick identity + optional 808 sub — not three kicks.
Insert chain (per element)
Kick: Pro-Q HPF ~30 Hz → light transient → mono → dry
Snare: Pro-Q → UAD 1176 light → Eventide SP2016 or dark plate send (not long hall on kick)
Hats/perc: HPF ~400 Hz; iZotope Vinyl or RC-20 light; keep sparse
Bus: UAD Oxide / Studer gentle → NI Solid Bus Comp 2–3 dB GR
Dub throws
- UAD Galaxy / RE-201 / Cascadia on snare or perc hits only — automate send
- Filter delay returns ~2–5 kHz
- One throw per 4–8 bars — arrangement, not constant clutter
Settings anchors (taste-check)
- Tempo: slow (70–95 BPM feel even if project BPM differs)
- Kick: long sub tail OR tight thud — pick one identity
- Snare: dry attack, plate tail on send
- Hats: 1/8 or offbeat sparse; mute before adding more perc
Taste knobs: vinyl amount, delay throw level.
Automation
- Open snare plate + delay throws into sections
- Strip to kick + sub only for breakdowns
Adjustment Rules
| Problem | Try |
|---|---|
| Too clubby | Slow hat rate; remove four-on-floor; darker room |
| Too clean | More Oxide/Vinyl; break sample instead of machine kit |
| Muddy | HPF kick; shorter snare reverb; less perc |
| Not dubby enough | Filtered delay throws; mute hats 1 bar; ride reverb automation |
Common Mistakes
- Bright EDM processing
- Reverb on kick
- Busy percussion (one idea per section)
- Same groove as 808/909 Foundation

Practical Summary
Slow heavy kick (dry), dusty dry snare into dark plate, sparse hats with vinyl/tape, bus glue light. Use filtered dub delay throws as the main arrangement move. Hypnotic and heavy — space is part of the groove.
