Sound Recipe - Air / Soft Vintage Keys
Target
Soft, airy vintage keys — Rhodes/Wurli/Pianet warmth with breathing dynamics and tape/plate space. Not a driving groove (see Scarbee paths in One Dove), not noir felt piano (see Noire in Lana). The job: gentle harmonic color that floats around the vocal.
The sound should feel:
- Soft and warm (velocity matters)
- Slightly lo-fi (tape, not destroyed)
- Airy in the top (room/plate, filtered)
- Sparse voicings
- Supportive — one chord every few beats is enough
Follows the house method: intention → source → preset/plugin start → routing → settings → automation → taste checks.
Useful References
- Hooverphonic / Lana electric warmth; Saint Etienne soft keys gauze
- Adjacent: Goldfrapp Felt Mountain (Wurlitzer produced path), One Dove Dubby (Scarbee color)
Steal the jobs: simple voicings, tape glue, dark plate, velocity-driven dynamics.
Best For
Dream-pop keys bed, cinematic verse warmth, soft electric piano under strings, vintage indie hooks.
Source + preset starting points
| Source | ⭐ | Start From | Going For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scarbee Vintage Keys | ⭐ | Mark I Rhodes soft, or A-200 Wurlitzer | Produced vintage electric |
| UADx Electra 88 | ⭐ | Rhodes/Wurli preset, moderate dynamics | Fast writing path |
| NI Melted Vibes | Mellow keys preset | Soft Kontakt color | |

| NI Lo-Fi Glow | Fuzzy keys (situational) | Extra lo-fi when RC-20 isn't enough |
Pick one key source per song.
Insert chain
- Pro-Q 4 — HPF ~80 Hz; gentle dip 250–400 Hz if muddy
- UAD LA-2A — 2–5 dB GR; let velocity breathe
- UAD Studer A800 / Oxide — light tape glue
- No insert reverb — use sends
Routing
S1 Dark Plateor SP2016 — medium decay, return HPF ~200 Hz- Optional El Capistan / Cascadia on phrase ends only
- Keep keys lower than vocal in verses; swell into choruses
Settings anchors (taste-check)
- Play simple triads/sevenths; leave space between changes
- Velocity: soft default; louder only on downbeats
- Sustain: moderate — don't hold through everything
Taste knobs: tape drive, plate send level.
Adjustment Rules
| Problem | Try |
|---|---|
| Too muddy | HPF; fewer notes; thinner Rhodes preset |
| Too lo-fi | Less Lo-Fi Glow/RC-20; Electra 88 instead |
| Too plain | Melted Vibes layer quiet; MicroPitch ±6 cents |
| Fighting vocal | Drop 2–5 kHz on keys; less sustain |
Common Mistakes
- Busy piano part (this is color, not composition)
- Bright pop reverb
- Layering Scarbee + Electra 88 + Logic VEP at full level
- Using Italian Grand when you need electric warmth (wrong tool)

Practical Summary
Scarbee Rhodes/Wurli or Electra 88, simple soft voicings, LA-2A + light tape, dark plate send. Optional Melted Vibes for extra mellow color. Velocity and space do the work — not part density.
