Used as ear-candy, counter-melody, or a frozen halo above warm analog beds.

The sound should feel:

Taste checks

  • If it clutters → play fewer notes; the bell should answer, not chatter

2. Glass Pad / Shimmer

Intention

A sustained, frozen, glassy bed — metallic but soft — that floats above warmer analog pads for an icy "expensive" top.

  • Keep it in the upper register; leave room below for the warm bed and vocal

Taste checks

  • If it's brittle/icy-painful → add a warm layer underneath + tape; HPF less aggressively only if it stays clear of the mids
  • If it disappears → it's probably fine quiet; automate it up in choruses rather than making it loud everywhere

3. Metallic Accent / Ear-Candy

Intention

Short inharmonic hits, sparkles, and struck-metal pings for transitions and ear-candy.

  • Process: Pro-Q to shape, Eventide Crystals (reverse/pitched halos), Blackhole for huge tails, ShaperBox for rhythmic gating
  • Place sparingly at section changes; reverse-reverb a hit to lead into a downbeat

Taste checks

  • Ear-candy works because it's rare. If it's everywhere, it stops being candy.

Adjustment Rules

Too harsh/piercing: dynamic-EQ or Soothe the stabbing partial, add tape, slight detune, lower FM mod depth.

Too cold/clinical: add a warm analog layer underneath, light chorus/MicroPitch, tape wobble.

Too cluttered: play fewer notes; one bell line + space beats a busy arpeggio.

Disappears in the mix: carve a 2–5 kHz pocket for it with EQ on competing parts rather than just turning it up.

Sounds cheap/plastic: tape glue, one cohesive shimmer reverb world, and warmth underneath the glass.


Common Mistakes

  • Leaving a harsh partial that stabs the ear
  • Playing constantly (bells need space)
  • All sparkle, no warm bed to support it
  • Too much shimmer reverb (turns to wash/mush)
  • Bright bell with full low end (HPF it — it's a top layer)
  • Using it as a wall instead of an accent/counter-melody
