Sound Recipe - U2 / "Numb" Rewind Loop & Industrial Synths

Target

The claustrophobic machine collage in U2's "Numb": a small, agitated whir that appears at the opening and persists through the track, dark digital strings, cheap electronic bleeps, sampled percussion and dialogue fragments, and serrated bursts that blur the line between guitar and synthesizer.

The sound should feel:

  • Mechanical, dry, narrow, and slightly irritating in the right way
  • Made from discarded noises rather than a polished synth preset
  • Dense around the edges while leaving the deadpan lead vocal in the center
  • Early-90s digital and industrial, not modern cinematic glitch

Follows the house method: intention → source → capture → loop → synth layers → routing → arrangement → taste checks.


The Important Correction

The strange opening sound is not primarily a synthesizer patch. It is documented as a Walkman cassette player rewinding, accidentally recorded and then looped through the song.

In Sound On Sound's interview with engineer Robbie Adams, Adams also describes Flood beginning with a stereo submix of guitar, bass, bass pedals, and drums. Brian Eno added roughly six or seven keyboard tracks—mainly Yamaha DX7 strings and samples—plus percussion, Arabic voices, congas, and loops made from dialogue and video material. The final mix used only about 15 or 16 tracks.

That history gives the recipe its hierarchy:

  1. Identity: a short cassette-transport rewind loop
  2. Atmosphere: dark, low-level DX-style strings
  3. Interference: sparse FM/arcade bleeps and edited fragments
  4. Body: the existing drum, bass, and distorted-guitar bed

Do not try to replace all four jobs with one complicated Pigments preset. The collision of unlike sources is the sound.


Fast Path

  1. Set the project near 91 BPM. If matching the record exactly, tempo-map the original rather than forcing every live element to a rigid grid.
  2. Record a cassette player rewinding with the UT Twin87 or a phone, then trim the best 330–660 ms burst into Logic Quick Sampler.
  3. Repeat the one-shot on one MIDI note. Start at 1/8 notes, keep it mono, and resist perfect quantization if the natural motor cadence feels better.
  4. Shape it with Pro-Q 4 or Channel EQ, then add a little Logic Bitcrusher or a filtered Trash duplicate.
  5. Add a very low FM8 string bed with slow attack, a dark top, and little harmonic movement.
  6. Use Halogen FM, FM8, or Logic EFM1 for a few short arcade-like bleeps—one or two events per bar, not a sequence preset.
  7. Keep the rewind loop mostly dry and audible throughout. Automate its level around the vocal instead of turning it into a big reverb effect.

At 91 BPM:

These are audition points, not a command to time-stretch the motor into perfect obedience.


1. The Rewind Loop - Closest Method

Capture

Use a real cassette mechanism if one is available. It does not need to be a Walkman; a cheap portable player, answering machine, or microcassette recorder can do the same musical job.

  • Put in a cassette you own and record 15–30 rewind starts, stops, and speed changes.
  • Start with the Twin87 in cardioid, about 5–10 cm from the transport. Use the SM57/58 if handling noise or the room is a problem. A phone recording is completely valid here.
  • Move the mic around the shell. Near the motor gives more whine; near the cassette door gives more spool chatter and clack.
  • Record with headroom. The start/stop clicks can peak much higher than the steady whir.
  • Capture several lengths rather than committing to the first clean pass. The awkward one is often the hook.

Do not sample the U2 master. Recording another humble machine preserves the method and produces a loop that belongs to this track.

Edit in Quick Sampler

  1. Choose a burst roughly 250–700 ms long with both whine and mechanical chatter.
  2. Trim silence but keep the initial clack if it gives the loop punctuation.
  3. Add 3–10 ms fades only if the edit clicks unintentionally.
  4. Use One Shot mode and repeat it with MIDI rather than relying on a perfectly seamless sustain loop.
  5. Turn velocity sensitivity down. The loop should behave like a machine, with small level changes programmed deliberately.
  6. Trigger the sample from one root-key note. Do not pitch-map copies across the keyboard unless that becomes an intentional variation.

Try three cadences:

  • Every 1/8 note: insistent machine pulse
  • Every 1/4 note: more room for the vocal and guitar
  • Natural/free loop: let a 350–600 ms burst cycle against the beat and create slow phase drift

The last option often feels closest to the record's unsettling indifference. If it grooves too neatly, it stops sounding accidental.

Rewind-loop chain

  1. Quick Sampler — raw rewind one-shot
  2. Pro-Q 4 — HPF around 250–450 Hz; LPF around 7–10 kHz; control one painful peak rather than smoothing everything
  3. Optional Logic Bitcrusher — 10–14 bit, modest downsampling, 10–30% mix
  4. Optional ShaperBox Volume — only for a repeatable gate when the audio edit will not sit; use a shallow shape
  5. Utility/gain — keep the result mono or very narrow

For a more damaged produced path, duplicate the loop and put iZotope Trash on the copy. Band-pass that duplicate around roughly 1–4 kHz, blend it under the clean loop, and keep the fundamental motor motion intact.

Taste check: mute every other electronic layer. If the loop alone still feels like an anxious machine in the room, it is ready.


2. Synthesized Rewind - No Cassette Available

This is the fallback, not the first choice. Build a small motor event, bounce it, then treat the bounce like found sound.

Source

Use Pigments, FM8, or Logic Retro Synth:

  • Carrier: sine or triangle in a high register
  • Add a quieter noise source or rough square wave for brush/chatter
  • Pitch envelope: sweep 12–24 semitones over roughly 120–300 ms
  • Fast pitch LFO: 12–20 Hz, only 20–60 cents deep, for motor vibration
  • Slow random pitch: about ±5–15 cents so repeats do not feel cloned
  • Amp envelope: instant attack, 180–450 ms decay, zero sustain, short release
  • Band-pass filter: center roughly 1.5–3.5 kHz, moderate resonance

Program 8–16 slightly different events, bounce them, and choose a short loop from the audio. Add one real click—pen mechanism, cassette door, mouse button, or switch—to stop it reading as a laser sound.

The crucial move is bouncing and editing. A continuously running LFO sounds like a synth demonstration; a printed, imperfect fragment sounds like a discovered machine.


3. DX7 String Smear

Intention

A dim digital fabric behind the rhythm—not a lush analog pad, not a recognizable 1980s ballad preset, and not the main chord instrument.

FM8 build

Start from an initialized patch or a plain DX-style string patch with its effects reduced.

  • Polyphony: 8 or more voices; unison off
  • Use two or three sine carriers in parallel, with one or two low-level modulators for a faint glassy edge
  • Carrier ratios: begin at 1.00 and 2.00; detune parallel carriers by about ±3–7 cents
  • Modulation amount: low enough that the body remains string-like, not bell-like
  • Amp attack: 70–180 ms
  • Sustain: 60–80%
  • Release: 600–1,400 ms
  • Velocity-to-level: low; the bed should not jump forward with performance
  • Optional ensemble/chorus: subtle and dark

After FM8:

  1. Pro-Q 4 — HPF around 150–250 Hz; soften 3–6 kHz if it becomes shiny
  2. Optional Studio D Chorus — low blend, no obvious wobble
  3. Very low send to SP2016 or a short dark ChromaVerb room

Play sustained root/fifth or two-note shapes from the song's harmony. Avoid busy inversions and animated wavetable motion. The string track should be noticed mainly when it is muted.

Logic Fast source

Use EFM1 or Retro Synth with a soft digital/string starting patch, slow the attack, shorten the release, reduce stereo width, and low-pass the glossy top. The exact DX architecture matters less than keeping the layer plain, cold, and low.


4. Arcade / FM Interference

Source

Use GForce Halogen FM for quick accidents, or FM8/Logic EFM1 for control.

  • One or two operators; simple 1:1 or 2:1 ratios
  • Attack: 0–5 ms
  • Decay: 40–160 ms
  • Sustain: 0
  • Release: 20–100 ms
  • High-pass around 600–1,000 Hz
  • Optional 12-bit/downsample color
  • Mostly mono; pan individual printed events only 20–40% from center

Print a few bleeps, then edit them as audio. Use only one to three in a bar, leave some bars empty, and favor interruptions at phrase ends. A continuous 16th-note arcade pattern makes the part cute; the target is hostile peripheral information.

For less literal bleeps, use Microwave 1 with a metallic wavetable, very short envelopes, no reverb, and small pitch changes between events.


5. Dialogue, Percussion, and Non-Musical Fragments

Eno's documented principle here was to make music from non-musical noises. Preserve the principle without copying the record's exact source material.

  • Record your own whispered instructions, radio-like speech, conga taps, controller clicks, and room noises.
  • Chop speech to 80–300 ms fragments so language becomes rhythm.
  • Reverse some fragments; keep others intelligible only for an instant.
  • HPF speech/noise fragments around 500–900 Hz and LPF around 4–7 kHz so they feel like small broadcast scraps.
  • Use NI Session Percussionist, Middle East, or a hand-played conga only when that source makes musical sense; do not add a generic “world” loop as decoration.
  • Avoid lifting the film or propaganda sample associated with the original. A new, cleared fragment will do the same arrangement job without imitating its baggage.

Send these fragments to a dedicated Interference bus and ride the bus, not twenty individual faders.


6. Serrated Guitar / Synth Stand-In

The released track is built over a real band submix, and its lacerating midrange bursts are part of why the electronic details work. If guitar is available, use a short, ugly distorted guitar figure and keep it drier than a classic U2 delay tone.

For a synth-only stand-in:

  • Pigments or Retro Synth: square plus saw, mono, no unison
  • Hard sync or light FM for a tearing edge
  • Fast filter attack; 100–300 ms decay; low sustain
  • Band-pass or high-pass enough to leave bass and kick alone
  • Add Trash or Logic Clip Distortion on a duplicate
  • Program low-mid single notes, fifths, and rests—not a chord pad

If it starts sounding like an industrial bass preset, shorten it and remove sub. Its job is a serrated rhythmic surface.


Routing and Space

Keep the worlds separate until a small shared bus:

Optional shared room: Eventide SP2016 or ChromaVerb, 100% wet, decay 0.6–1.2 s, predelay 0–15 ms, return HPF around 350 Hz, LPF around 5–7 kHz. Send very little. This record's tension comes from dry things colliding, not from a large atmospheric tail.

Keep the rewind loop close to the center. Let strings provide width. Pan only selected interference events; do not put an autopanner on the entire collage.


Arrangement and Automation

  • Establish the rewind loop before the track feels full, then leave it running as the nervous system.
  • Lower it 1–3 dB in the densest vocal sections instead of muting it.
  • Bring the DX string bed in slowly and keep it below conscious attention.
  • Print bleeps and samples, then arrange them by hand. Delete at least half the first pass.
  • Use mutes, hard edits, and sudden appearances more than smooth filter sweeps.
  • Keep the deadpan lead vocal dry, central, and rhythmically intelligible; the collage should crowd the character, not the consonants.
  • Let one source own each band: motor whine in the upper mids, vocal in the center mids, guitar in the abrasive low mids, bass below.

The original production achieved overload with a relatively small track count. Density comes from contrast and timing, not from unlimited layers.


Taste Knobs

  1. Loop length/cadence — locked industrial pulse ↔ uneasy free-running machine
  2. Rewind band-pass and damage blend — recognizable transport ↔ abstract electronic insect
  3. DX string level — dry confrontation ↔ cold digital fog

Lock the rewind source, narrow placement, and sparse interference. Those are the identity.


Common Mistakes

  • Searching synth presets for the opening sound: the original identity is a cassette-transport recording.
  • Perfectly time-stretching the rewind: removes the awkward mechanical cadence.
  • Making the loop stereo: turns a nagging object into ambient decoration.
  • Using a lush analog pad: the documented keyboard color is predominantly DX7 strings and samples.
  • Adding huge reverb: pushes the noise behind the singer instead of letting it intrude.
  • Running a generative glitch preset: too modern, busy, and self-consciously clever.
  • Making every sound distorted: preserve a clean rewind layer so the object remains legible.
  • Copying source samples literally: reproduce the production method with original, cleared recordings.

Add a very low FM8 DX-string smear, a handful of short Halogen/FM8 bleeps, and your own edited speech or percussion fragments. The sound of "Numb" is not one heroic synth patch—it is a mundane machine loop refusing to go away while several small, incompatible sources accumulate around it.
